Diagnosis
of Breast Cancer by Mammography
Remote-lecture to Semipalatinsk Consultative Diagnostic
Center via the Internet |
A first remote-lecture was conducted via the Internet
in cooperation with Semipalatinsk Consultative Diagnostic Center,
Kazakhstan and Atomic Bomb Disease Institute, Nagasaki University
Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences on Thursday, November 30,
2006.
About 450 nuclear explosions were conducted on Semipalatinsk nuclear
test site (SNTS) which located 150 km from Semipalatinsk city, Kazakhstan
from 1949. The residents of Semipalatinsk region believe that nuclear
test had a negative influence to their health. Breast cancer is one
of the major causes of female mortality in Kazakhstan.
Firstly, Dr. Ichiro Sekine (Professor, Department of Molecular Pathology,
Atomic Bomb Disease Institute) addressed a greeting speech to the
audience in Semipalatinsk Consultative Diagnostic Center. After,
Dr. Shigeto Maeda (Lecturer, Department of Surgery) delivered a lecture
entitled “Diagnosis of Breast Cancer by Mammography” to
doctors of Semipalatinsk Consultative Diagnostic Center, Oncology
Center and students of Semipalatinsk State Medical Academy. A mammogram
is an x-ray examination of the breast. It is used to detect and evaluate
breast abnormalities both in women who have no breast complaints
and in women who have breast symptoms such as a lump, pain, or nipple
discharge. The main purpose of this lecture was how to detect signs
of breast cancer on mammography image. On following the discussion,
questions about US diagnosis of breast cancer and diagnosis of mastopathy
were discussed. Audience recognized that this kind of lecture is
very useful and they wished to continue remote-lecture.
In Kazakhstan, Public awareness of the risks of breast cancer is
very low. More than half of women applied for medical aid at the
later stages of the diseases when no treatment effective. In view
of this complicated situation, UN (UNFPA) has started the project “Consolidated
Response to Breast Cancer” in 2006. As the part of this project,
UNFPA in cooperation with Ministry of Health Care, Kazakhstan and
Nagasaki University, Japan, has started a joint effort in education
of medical specialists of Kazakhstan.
Coordination: Serik Meirmanov (Assistant Professor, Nagasaki
University) , Moldagalieva Zh.(Head), Nuralinova G., Pudja O, Samokhin
G. and. Parfyonov A. (Semipalatinsk Consultative Diagnostic Center).
