Reports on the 2nd Asian Congress of
Radiation Research (ACRR 2009) |
Keiji Suzuki, Department of Molecular Medicine |
This year, between May 17th and 20th, the 2nd ACRR was held in Seoul, Korea. This congress followed the 1st ACRR meeting in Hiroshima four years ago. It is well known that International Congress of Radiation Research (ICRR), which is held every four years, as the biggest international meeting in the field of radiation research. According to the significant progress in radiation sciences in Asian countries, there has been the discussion to start ACRR.
This time, Korean Association for Radiation Research is the main organizer for the meeting. Because Korean scientists are mostly from radiation medicine area, nuclear medicine, nuclear imaging, medical physics, targeted therapy, and radiation protection consist the major topics together with radiation bioscience. Detailed reports will be provided by other members who joined the meeting.
Notably, approximately one-third of the participants were students, indicating that more young scientists will be by the next meeting in Beijin, China in 2013. Needless to say, this is a good sign for the bright future of radiation related research in Asian countries, and the Nagasaki GCOE program should take part in this regional progress. Although we have already started communications with the scientists in those countries personally in order to create an Asian scientific consortium, we need to further extend the relationship by making scientific agreements between those institutes and Nagasaki University. This should also be helpful for the future of our program. |
