Report on International Council of
Nurses (ICN) 24th Quadrennial Congress 2009

Seitaro Teraoka
Life Sciences and Radiation Research, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences

The Irnational Council of Nurses (ICN) 24th Quadrennial Congress 2009 was held between June 27 and July 4, 2009 in Durban, South Africa. This ICN congress presents a unique opportunity to build alliances with other nurses and nursing organizations and to put the health of nations at the top of the political and social agenda. Also we nurses recognize that we are working now in difficult environments; we are confronted with many difficult problems like emerging pandemics, disasters, violence, and so on. Nurses from various countries, African, European, American, and Asian, including Japan, were invited to facilitate the discussion about those problems, and to lead change and build healthier nations. Especially, various issues such as supporting people who were confronted with disaster were extensively discussed.
