Report on Ataxia
Telangiectasia Workshop 2008 |
Masatoshi Suzuki, Department
of Molecular Medicine |
ATW2008 was held to April
22nd to 26th in Shiga, Japan. Ataxia telangiectasia
mutated (ATM) which is a product of responsible
gene in Ataxia telangicetasia (AT) was mainly
discussed in this meeting. Functions of ATM-related
kinases such as DNA-PKcs and ATR, and target
proteins of ATM were discussed as well. Since
many international leading researchers in
these fields joined to this meeting, it is
a good opportunity to hear the latest report
directory. Major topics in this time were
(1)the mechanism of DNA double-strand break
recognition, (2) ATM function in neural stem
cells (NSC) and during development in nerve
system, (3) challenge of the advanced treatment
for AT patient.
Since a neurodegeneration is one of the features
in AT patient, it seems that ATM is an important
factor in the nervous system. ATM function
is well examined with proliferating cells
so far, but there is less understanding of
ATM function in nervous system. However, some
progressions on this field were presented
this time. Collectively, ATM functions in
nervous system and NSC but there is a different
function on ATM in a developmental stage-dependent
manner, suggesting we need consider and compared
ATM function in NSC and nervous system with
in proliferating cells.
ATM plays a central role in cells exposed
to ionizing radiation and we must elucidate
its function for further understanding of
not only in radiation biology but also in
radiological medicine. This international
meeting stimulates me to expand my project,
and finally I’d like to thank for the
support to join to this interesting meeting. |
