Pathogenesis of neglected tropical infectious diseases

Dr. Kazunori Oishi
Visiting-Professor of Nagasaki University, Specially approved visiting professor of Osaka University, Japan

Dengue, a mosquito-borne viral infection in humans, has become a major public health concern in tropical and subtropical countries, and the characteristic of clinical manifestations is a transient thrombocytopenia. We have recently demonstrated that dengue virus-induced apoptotic platelets are phagocytosed by macrophages via a phosphatydilserin-recognizing pathway in secondary DV infection. Role of this phenomenon will be discussed. On the other hand, we are currently conducting a population-based epidemiological study of invasive diseases caused by Streptococcus suis, a zoonotic pathogen, in northern Thailand, and have demonstrated the incidence rate and the mode of infection in this disease. Pathogenesis of these neglected tropical infectious diseases will be discussed.
