Mesenchymal Stromal Cells: Risk and Benefit
Professor Willem Eduard Fibbe
Hematology and Stem Cell Biology,
Head Department of Immunotherapy and Blood Transfusion,
Leiden University Medical Center, Netherlands
Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are multipotent progenitor cells and play an important role in the regulation of hematopoiesis. The interest in MSC therapy has been raised by the observation that MSCs are able to modulate immune responses in vitro and in vivo. These properties may be used in clinical therapy in the context of allogeneic stem cell transplantation, in particular to modulate Graft-versus-Host disease and graft rejection.
Professor Willem E Fibbe is from Leiden University, which has long historical relationship with Nagasaki University. He is one of the leaders in MSCs research and will present recent data on basic research and therapeutic application using MSCs. His lecture will provide us with many insights not only in the field of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation but also in regenerative medicine.
