Introduction of our research

The Department of Disaster Resilience and Science, Atomic Bomb Disease Institute was originally established in April 1997, and Professor Yoshisada Shibata became the first head of the department in December 1998. After Professor Shibata’s retirement, Noboru Takamura was appointed as Professor of the department in April 2008, and the name of the department was renamed to the Department of Disaster Resilience and Science in April 2025 due to the reorganization of the Institute.

In addition to research and medical support for victims related to the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant accident and other nuclear disasters, we have implemented risk and crisis communication after the TEPCO Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station accident occured in March 2011. We have established satellite offices in Kawauchi Village, Tomioka town, Okuma town, and Futaba town, and conducted risk communication and related research activities to promote the reconstruction of affected areas in Fukushima.

We have accepted medical professionals, researchers, graduate students, and undergraduate students who are interested in radiation medical science, global health, and social medicine. In addition, we are currently developing various projects in collaboration with medical institutions and local governments.
